First Ever Geico Commercial

This commercial makes absolutely no sense to me. First of all, Geico has never failed at making bad commercials. Nowadays, everyone who watches Geico knows what it's for because of the cute Gecko and the world-famous slogan, "15 minutes could save YOU 15% or more on car insurance." However, back in 2006, I don't think anybody knew what Geico was. This commercial doesn't even tell you what Geico is! It's shot in an airport with absolutely no information about cars. The only remote hint that you get that it has to do with car insurance is in the phone number, where the last four digits spell out "auto."
I think that the target audience of this commercial are young men and women looking for a simple way to get care insurance.
In this commercial they use wit and humor because they try to make it funny by adding a dumb caveman. I also thought it was clever that Geico advertised Geico within their commercial. Geico never fails at having a "commercial mascot," ranging from cavemen, to Geckos, to juices.

  1. I actually remember this commercial! I thought it was pretty funny because of the caveman's reaction and I knew that this caveman was Geico's caveman. I don't remember what commercial they did this in but I remember them introducing the caveman to Geico's commercials and I was so confused! I know they started using that slogan "so easy, a caveman can do it," but Geico has a tendency to take things to the next level. In this instance, they are taking things too literally. I try and respect the fact that Geico is making an effort to be original and stand out with their commercials, but a lot of times i find their commercials to be more annoying than funny. This definitely uses Diversion because cavemen have nothing to do with insurance, but only Geico would be willing to risk their reputation by making that connection.

  2. I like how you went all the way back to find this certain commercial. And now that you pointed it out, it is so strange how there are no clues for what Geico really is for, but it did set up a logo that Geico would attain with the Gheko and their slogan. I would say that this ad is funny rather than successful, but now Geico definitely became a big insurance company (judging by the amount of ad's they release).
